Michigan State University Basketball’s LED Video Wall Upgrade at the Breslin Center

Client Overview

The Michigan State University (MSU) Basketball program sought an upgraded, high-resolution video wall for the Breslin Center to replace the legacy Christie MicroTile system originally installed in 2013. This prominent display on the bridge, connecting the Event Center with the lobby and offices, had been turned off for over a year and a half due to the discontinuation of service parts.

Challenge

MSU needed a new, low-maintenance LED wall that offered:

   •    Superior Resolution: Improved image clarity with a pixel pitch under 1mm, with options at 0.9mm and 0.6mm.

   •    Versatile Display Capabilities: Multi-source content display for video highlights, promotional media, and marketing content.

   •    Minimal Construction: While making use of existing infrastructure where possible, MSU also sought to minimize construction while ensuring a flush and aesthetically pleasing installation.

   •    Future-Proof Technology: A modernized control system with enhanced video processing to maximize content presentation flexibility and maintain ease of use.

A Recruiting Paradise

Solution

Bluewater Technologies proposed a custom solution that addressed MSU’s needs for an advanced display while streamlining installation requirements. The team recommended the K-WAV ATF 0.9mm COB LED video wall, a high-resolution option that aligns with MSU’s goals for image quality and operational efficiency.

Key Solution Components:

   •    LED Display:

        •      Dimensions: 23.61 feet wide by 4.43 feet high.

        •      Resolution: Ultra-fine 0.9mm pixel pitch for vivid image detail, with alternative options of 1.2mm and 0.6mm for cost-benefit analysis.

        •      Durability: Chip-on-Board (COB) technology enhances durability and reduces maintenance needs, a crucial consideration for high-traffic areas.

   •    Mounting and Infrastructure:

        •      Removal of Legacy Components: Bluewater will dismantle the Christie MicroTile wall and associated hardware.

        •      Custom Fitting: Given the recess dimensions, side panels or shrouding will be installed by MSU to cover any voids and ensure a sleek, flush appearance.

        •      Support Structure: MSU’s Infrastructure Planning and Facilities (IPF) team will handle the substructure modifications, including an expanded height for the new LED wall.

   •    Data & Power Requirements:

        •      Cable Pathway: 24 new Cat6a cables will be run from the AV rack to the wall, requiring two new 2-inch conduits to accommodate the additional cabling. MSU will be responsible for the pathway setup.

        •      Power Supply: The LED wall requires eight 120V 20A circuits; existing power receptacles will be reused, ensuring efficient energy distribution.

   •    Control System Refresh:

        •      Processor and Switcher: Bluewater recommended upgrading the current Crestron processor and touchscreen interface to enhance user experience and provide reliable, intuitive control over the video wall’s content.

        •      Repurposed Spyder Processor: MSU has the option to repurpose the Spyder processor if deemed suitable, enabling cost savings while retaining familiar controls.

Implementation

How It All Transpired

     1.           Consultation and Assessment: The Bluewater and K-WAV teams, met with MSU on-site to evaluate the existing setup and finalize the design requirements.

     2.           Design Proposal: Presented multiple options for display resolution, potential manufacturers, and cost-effective solutions to provide MSU with flexibility in budgeting while meeting quality standards.

     3.           Installation Planning: Coordinated responsibilities with MSU, assigning Bluewater to system installation and network setup while IPF managed construction requirements.

     4.           Testing and Calibration: Once installed, the LED wall will undergo testing to ensure optimal performance and alignment with MSU’s visual and operational standards.

Results

The Breslin Center’s new LED video wall will significantly enhance MSU Basketball’s ability to showcase dynamic content, reinforce brand messaging, and engage fans and visitors with vivid game footage and promotional content.

Project Highlights

   •    Improved Visual Quality: The sub-1mm resolution delivers exceptional clarity, ideal for displaying high-action sports footage.

   •    Enhanced Flexibility: The wall can handle up to six concurrent video sources, enabling a versatile display of game highlights, marketing content, and more.

   •    Future-Ready Control: Upgrading the control processor simplifies content management, ensuring MSU can adapt as their content needs evolve.
